Ali Hassan Khalil, an Amal MP and right-hand to Parliamentary Speaker Nabih Berri, stated on Wednesday that the Lebanese need "reconciliation and transparency around a national vision for Lebanon," at a time when Hezbollah is particularly weakened by its war against Israel.
The government has "the responsibility to liberate the land by all means, as stipulated in the ministerial declaration," said Khalil, as quoted by the state-run National News Agency (NNA). The Amal Movement gave its confidence in the new government of Nawaf Salam, which has pledged to work for the liberation of south Lebanon from Israeli occupation.
"It is essential to adopt a logic of national unity, as this country cannot be governed by domination, but on the basis of cooperation, balance, and understanding between all, to consolidate the internal situation and restore Lebanon's place on the Arab and regional map," he stated.
"We must understand that it is no longer acceptable to remain in political stagnation. We must welcome calls for dialogue," he added. "We need reconciliation and transparency on a national vision for a Lebanon that must offer protection for all. This will lay the groundwork for a long-term strategic national project."
During the government's vote of confidence, the speech by Kataeb leader Samy Gemayel stood out by dedicating the entirety of his intervention to a call for a "national conference of truth and reconciliation" to "put on the table the concerns of all political components" to "build a state."
Khalil further said: "We remain clearly committed to implementing resolution 1701. The one violating this text and all its annexes is the Israeli enemy. The one who violates, attacks, and occupies is the Israeli enemy."
Adopted in 2006 following a previous war between Israel and Hezbollah, resolution 1701 explicitly gave the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) and the Lebanese army the authority to operate and maintain peace along the Blue Line, which delineates the border between the two countries. It also stipulated that Hezbollah should stay away from the border, in exchange for Israel respecting Lebanese sovereignty.
Khalil was speaking at the funeral of the father of the mufti of Sour and Jabal Amel, Sheikh Hassan Abdallah.
"Any Israeli presence on Lebanese territory is direct occupation, which we cannot ignore," he said. Citing Imam Moussa Sadr, founder of Amal, the MP stated that "there is no peace for Lebanon without peace in the south," a region where the Israeli army maintains positions on five strategic sites, after the deadline set for Feb. 18 for the total withdrawal of its troops.
