In a context of incomplete withdrawal of Israeli forces from southern Lebanon and rumors of a halt in American aid to Lebanon, the U.S. State Department reaffirmed on Tuesday its support for the Lebanese Army.

“The United States is committed to supporting the implementation of the cessation of hostilities and will continue to assist the Lebanese Army, the only guarantor of security in Lebanon,” the State Department wrote on its X page.

Following a devastating war that lasted from October 2023 until the cease-fire in November 2024, the Israeli army, after postponing its withdrawal from southern Lebanon by more than two weeks, finally left the border villages it still occupied, paving the way for the deployment of the Lebanese Army in accordance with United Nations Resolution 1701. However, it maintained its presence at five locations, deeming them “strategic.”

Lebanon responded by announcing it would lodge a complaint with the U.N. Security Council, adding it favored only diplomatic solutions.
