The office of Shiite dignitary Mohammad Hussein Fadlallah announced Tuesday that the first day of the month of Ramadan will fall on Saturday, March 1, in a statement addressed to his followers.
Dar al-Fatwa, the highest Sunni authority in Lebanon, has yet to announce a date for the beginning of this holy month for Muslims, nor have other Muslim authorities.
During Ramadan, one of the five pillars of Islam, believers are invited to refrain from drinking, eating, smoking and having sexual relations from dawn until sunset. Muslims are also called upon to give almsgiving to the poor, known as zakat al-Fitr. Ramadan ends with Eid al-Fitr, the "Festival of Breaking the Fast."
