The Lebanese government, headed by Nawaf Salam, completed its examination of the ministerial statement during a meeting at the Baabda Palace, under the leadership of the president, Joseph Aoun.
The commission responsible for drafting the ministerial statement is chaired by Nawaf Salam and includes Deputy Prime Minister Tarek Mitri – who is part of the quota for the president and Nawaf Salam – and the ministers of Finance, Yassine Jaber (Amal), Culture, Ghassan Salameh (Aoun and Salam), Transport and Public Works, Fayez Rassamni (Progressive Socialist Party) and Industry, Joe Issa al-Khoury (Lebanese Forces).
The ministerial statement is the first political test for the government. It is based on this text that Parliament will decide whether to grant its confidence to the new team. While, in the past, the broad lines of the ministerial statement were generally known in advance, the political situation, particularly with the weakening of Hezbollah and the fall of the Assad regime in Syria, could change the situation. The question of removing the reference to the statement supported by Hezbollah, "Army, People, Resistance," from the statement is particularly posed, especially since the president promised in his inaugural address in January to address the issue of the party's weapons.
