What is the strategic significance of the Marjayoun district for Israel?

The explosion in Tayr Harfa, a village in the Sour district near the Israeli border, was caused by a mine placed inside an armchair, according to a local village official contacted by our correspondent. The device had been planted during the Israeli military’s occupation of the area.

One of the victims, Abbas Haidar, was clearing debris from his home — partially destroyed by an Israeli strike before the cease-fire — when he and a friend moved the booby-trapped armchair, triggering the explosion. His two daughters, aged seven and eight, were killed instantly, along with the man assisting him. Haidar’s third daughter was injured.

South of Saida, the Israeli air force bombed Tebna, located between Teffahta and Baissariyeh, according to residents cited by our correspondent. This area has been targeted multiple times since the cease-fire took effect on Nov. 27, 2024. Ambulances were seen rushing to the scene, residents reported.

The Israeli military also set fire to homes in Kfar Kila, a village in the Marjayoun district, where few structures remain standing, following the army's occupation and destruction of the area.

‘It's about time’: Lebanese Army deployment in southern Lebanon

The Israeli military continues to occupy several villages in southern Lebanon, from which it is required to withdraw by Feb. 18, 2025, in line with the extended cease-fire agreement. Meanwhile, the Israeli military continues to destroy houses and infrastructure in areas it still occupies and carries out sporadic strikes across the region, often using drones. The Lebanese Army continues to deploy and reinforce its units in southern Lebanon in accordance with the cease-fire terms.

Overnight, the Israeli army announced it had struck "two military sites containing Hezbollah weapons" in Lebanon, claiming they violated the cease-fire agreement. In a statement released on X, the army added it "continues operating to eliminate any threat against the State of Israel."

By around 11 p.m., at least one Israeli strike hit a valley in the Nabatieh district of southern Lebanon, according to local media, while the Israeli air force conducted four strikes in the Baalbeck-Hermel district, near the Syrian border, according to our regional correspondent. The airstrikes primarily targeted the Nabi Sheet area, Janta and the Anti-Lebanon mountains, on the Lebanese-Syrian border.
