Caretaker Lebanese Minister of Public Works, Ali Hamieh, stated Thursday to L’Orient-Le Jour that he has appointed Gaby Hajj, from Kesrouan, to the department of roads and buildings, following the retirement earlier this week of Ali Hoballah, who held this position.

The appointment sparked controversy in local media, with Hamieh being accused of violating a recent circular from caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati. After the appointment of Nawaf Salam to form the first Cabinet of Joseph Aoun's mandate, Mikati had indeed prohibited his team members from making formal appointments.

“I did not appoint a new department director. My approach aims to ensure the continuity of public service, within the framework of managing current affairs in the strictest sense,” Hamieh said. “My decision is not binding on my successor,” Hamieh clarified.

The portfolio of Public Works is expected to be part of the Progressive Socialist Party's share under Taymour Joumblatt within the future team. Businessman Fayez Rasamni is expected to be appointed to it.
