A suspect was arrested after shots were fired in the U.S. state of Ohio, resulting in one killed and several injuries, local authorities announced Wednesday.

The attack took place Tuesday evening in a cosmetics warehouse in New Albany, in the northeastern United States, said Greg Jones, the chief of the city police.

A suspect was later arrested by investigators, the police said in a statement Wednesday.

According to Jones, the shooting resulted in five injuries. The police statement mentioned "multiple victims" without providing further details.

"It appears to be a targeted attack," said Jones, adding that the police evacuated about 150 people and a firearm was found in the warehouse.

"It is a tragedy. This has happened [before] all over the United States, we hoped it would never happen here," he stated.

With more guns than inhabitants, the United States has the highest firearm death rate of all developed countries.

Shootings are a recurring scourge that successive governments have so far failed to curb, with many Americans remaining deeply attached to their guns.
