The last 24 hours of the war in Lebanon


In this new episode of our podcast "Testimonies from Beirut," we look back at the hours leading up to the ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon on November 27. These dark and terrifying hours were quickly swept away by the relief and joy of the following day, when two months of intense, violent warfare between the Israeli army and Hezbollah finally came to an end.

However, for our interviewee, a woman from the southern suburbs of Beirut now living in Hamra, the afternoon and night before the ceasefire were chaotic beyond measure. "That day, I was scared like never before," she recalls. She describes the atmosphere in the west Beirut neighborhood, which was targeted for the first and only time during the war, the widespread panic throughout the capital, and her father’s steadfast belief, despite the chaos, that a ceasefire was imminent.

The next day, she watched the scenes of jubilation on television and wanted to feel the joy too. However when she returned to her home in Ghobeiry, what awaited her there, was far from a celebration.
