The Gaza Health Ministry announced Saturday that at least 32 people were killed in the past 48 hours in the Palestinian territory, which has been at war with Israel for more than 15 months.

This brings the total death toll to 46,537, the ministry said in a statement, adding that 109,571 people had also been injured in Gaza since the war began following an unprecedented Hamas attack on Israel on Oct. 7, 2023.

The ministry noted that it had recently added 499 deaths to the toll that had previously been recorded as incomplete.

A study published Friday in the prestigious British medical journal The Lancet estimated that the death toll in Gaza during the first nine months of the war between Israel and Hamas was approximately 40% higher than the figures reported by Palestinian health authorities.

Israel has questioned the credibility of the Gaza Health Ministry’s data, though the United Nations has deemed them reliable.

The Lancet study did not account for those missing. The UN’s humanitarian agency, OCHA, stated that around 10,000 Gaza residents remain missing and are believed to be buried under rubble.

The Gaza war was triggered by a Hamas attack on Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, which resulted in the deaths of 1,208 people, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally based on official Israeli figures.
