He will not follow in his father's footsteps. Mohammad Mahdi Nasrallah, the son of former Hezbollah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah, ruled out a political career in a brief televised address published Saturday on X by the Arabic channel of Iran’s official news agency.
His father, who was killed in an Israeli airstrike on Sept. 27, was highly popular among Lebanon’s Shiite community and beyond.
"Among the many qualities of the Sayyed [Hassan Nasrallah] was his realism. I recently noticed that many expectations have resurfaced regarding me, and I wanted to adjust these expectations to remain realistic," said Nasrallah in the video. "I am in pursuit of knowledge. According to my views and what the Sayyed asked of me, I want to fully dedicate myself to studying," he explained.
No politics, no military
"I will be at your service in fields related to my religious studies: media, awareness, culture ... Many people are already working in this field, and we are working hand in hand to try to fill the void left by the Sayyed's martyrdom," he continued.
"As for other fields, such as politics or military affairs, there are qualified specialists doing what they can to fill that void on their end," Mohammad Mahdi Nasrallah concluded.
Last March, Nasrallah shared a video on Instagram that was widely circulated on social media. He appeared seated at a desk, seemingly copying sacred texts, with his father’s voice resonating in the background.
The party plans to hold "a large funeral" in memory of the former Hezbollah leader but has indicated that the ceremony will take place after the 60-day period for implementing the cease-fire terms with Israel expires.
