Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides will travel to Beirut on Friday afternoon to extend his congratulations to his new Lebanese counterpart, Joseph Aoun, according to the state-run National News Agency (NNA). This will be the first international visit Aoun will receive since his election the day before.

Last June, statements by the former Secretary-General of Hezbollah, Hassan Nasrallah, caused tensions between Beirut and Nicosia. He had warned Cyprus against any use by Israel of Cypriot infrastructure in the event of conflict. Cypriot authorities had repeatedly stated afterward that their country, located 200 km from Lebanon, would not get involved in the event of war.
