According to the statement, Netanyahu was examined at a hospital this week and diagnosed with a urinary tract infection caused by benign prostatic hyperplasia. Following antibiotic treatment to eliminate the infection, it was decided that he would undergo the procedure.
The prime minister's office added that the cabinet's meeting on Sunday will take place as planned, but it was not specified whether Netanyahu will be present.
While prostate removal surgery, also known as a prostatectomy, is a common procedure, it is still considered a major surgery. According to the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, prostatectomies are typically performed on otherwise healthy patients younger than 75 years old who have localized cancer, or cancer that hasn't spread.
Seventy-five-year-old Netanyahu underwent surgery for a hernia earlier this year and last year had a pacemaker installed after he suffered a “transient heart block.” The surgery came a week after he was hospitalized for what he said at the time was dehydration.
