BEIRUT — The municipality of Burj al-Barajneh announced Sunday that an ongoing water crisis in the neighborhood began Thursday, according to the state-run National News Agency.
The municipality attributed the crisis to "several factors beyond [its control]," including encroachments on the main water line by residents of a coastal town who were "illegally diverting water to their reservoirs," technical failures in the main wells, and the shutdown of two additional wells.
In a statement, the municipality said it had made intensive efforts to contact the relevant authorities to address the crisis as quickly as possible.
“The municipality of Burj al-Barajneh is following this case with the utmost seriousness and care and we are in constant communication with the relevant parties to ensure our neighborhood's right to obtain its natural share of water", the statement reads.
The municipality also apologized to the residents of Burj al-Barajneh for the inconvenience caused by this interruption and pledged to "spare no effort to restore water to [their] homes as soon as possible.”
Burj al-Barajneh, located in the southern suburbs of Beirut, was subjected to constant Israeli airstrikes during the Hezbollah-Israel war from September to November.
