In reaction to the remarks made by Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) leader Abu Mohamed Jolani, some Lebanese analysts and officials said, “It’s none of his business.”Jolani had indicated that he is ready to support Lebanese Army Chief General Joseph Aoun, as Lebanon’s next president if the country chose him. “This sentence shouldn’t have been said, simply because it’s an internal affair that only concerns Lebanon,” said Joseph Bahout, director of Issam Fares Institute at AUB. “I really don’t see how it concerns him,” said a retired army officer who declined to be named.These virulent reactions reflect a deep-seated apprehension in the subconscious of many Lebanese, dating back to the days when Syria ruled the roost in Lebanon and the Baathist regime’s army and intelligence services occupied the country for more than two decades and steered...
