BEIRUT — The head of the Maronite Church, Patriarch Bechara Rai, expressed confidence on Tuesday that a president will be elected in Lebanon in 2025.
Speaking at a conference on strengthening the Christian presence in Lebanon in Bkerki, Rai said, "We are all looking forward to Jan. 9, and we have no doubt that a president will be elected in the new year 2025, which has been declared a holy year by the Pope," according to the state-run National News Agency (NNA).
Lebanon has been without a president for more than two years, with several attempts to elect one failing. Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri called for a new electoral session on Jan. 9, after more than a year of delays.
"Lebanon does not die, and we have gone through difficult circumstances. All signs indicate that we are at the end of the road to reach salvation," Rai added.
Rai also met with presidential candidate Neemat Frem in Bkerki on Tuesday, the NNA reported.
