UN envoy for Syria calls for 'bloodbath' to be avoided

The U.N.'s special envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, has called for calm in the country following a lightning rebel advance in recent days.

“I reiterate my call for de-escalation, calm, the avoidance of a bloodbath and the protection of civilians in accordance with international humanitarian law,” Pedersen told the Doha Forum, calling for ”the launch of a process that leads to the realization of the legitimate aspirations of the Syrian people.”
