HTS’ vague discourse towards Shiites and Alawites

With the progression of the offensive by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), the main group within the armed opposition to the Assad regime in Syria, many are concerned about the consequences for minorities. HTS, in power in Idlib province since 2017, is known for its ultra-conservative conception of society, and its advance raises questions about the future of minorities in the areas it is capturing, particularly since the group was previously affiliated with al-Qaeda, with whom it split in 2016. But since Aleppo’s fall, HTS and other rebel factions have sent signals that seem to point to its willingness to reach out to minorities, or at least to some of them.
