BEIRUT — At least four Italian peacekeepers incurred minor injuries in an explosion caused by two rockets hitting a UNIFIL base in southern Lebanon, Italy’s Defense Ministry said in a statement Friday.
"Such attacks are unacceptable," said Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. "I renew my call for the parties involved to guarantee the safety of UNIFIL soldiers at all times, and to work together to quickly identify those responsible."
Meloni did not come to an conclusions herself, but her Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani pointed the finger at Hezbollah: “It must have been two missiles ... launched by Hezbollah, once again,” Tajani told the press in Turin on Friday, according to AFP.
The attack at the UNP 2-3 base in Shamaa (Sour), which hosts the Italian contingent, is the latest in a string of attacks against the U.N. mission tasked with preventing hostilities from escalating in the south of Lebanon since its establishment in 1978.
Italy is the main European contributor (1,068 soldiers, according to the UN), ahead of Spain (676), France (673) and Ireland (370), AFP reports.
“From an initial reconstruction, two rockets hit a bunker on the base and a room near the international military police, causing damage to the surrounding infrastructure. Some glass shattered due to the explosion, hitting the four soldiers,” the ministry said in a statement.
Italy’s Defense Minister Guido Crosetto said he contacted both Lebanese and Israeli authorities stressing that UNIFIL troops remain in southern Lebanon “to offer a window of opportunity for peace and cannot become hostage to militia attacks. It is intolerable that once again a UNIFIL base has been hit."
He said he would try to contact Israel’s new defense minister “to ask him to avoid using the UNIFIL bases as a shield.”
In the past few weeks since Israel launched its ground offensive against southern Lebanon, the U.N. force recorded more than 30 incidents resulting in material damage or injury to peacekeepers, including around 20 caused by Israeli fire or action.
On Nov.14 , four Ghanaian peacekeepers were injured when a rocket, likely fired by non-state actors within Lebanon, struck their base "UNP 5-42" near the village of Ramieh (Sour). Three of the injured were hospitalized in Sour for treatment, UNIFIL had said in a statement.
On the same day, UNIFIL's Sector West Headquarters in Shamaa (Sour) was also hit by five rockets, causing significant damage to a maintenance workshop, though no injuries were reported. Additionally, a UNIFIL patrol near Khirbet Selm (Bint Jbeil) came under direct fire, and against no peacekeepers were harmed in this incident.
