Woman carrying over $270,000 in counterfeit bills arrested

The Lebanese Internal Security Forces (ISF) announced in a press release that its forces had arrested a traveler (designated by her initials, aged 44 and holding dual Lebanese and Syrian nationality) carrying two briefcases containing counterfeit bills with a face value of $271,500. The smuggler was “attempting to leave Lebanese territory for Turkey.”

According to the ISF press release, the arrest took place on Oct. 22. During questioning, the traveler claimed she had no knowledge of the contents of her luggage. She stated that she had met another woman in Turkey (also referred to by her initials), who had asked her to collect two “bags of clothes” from a person in Beirut and transport them to Turkey in exchange for $150.

The defendant was referred to the Financial Crimes Bureau for further investigation.
