Long gone are the days when Israel targeted only Hezbollah fighters and positions. Since July, hundreds of civilians have been killed or injured in Israeli bombings of residential areas, especially in Beirut and its southern suburbs, following the assassinations of Hezbollah leaders. Among those killed were military commander Fouad Shukur on July 30 and Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah on Sept. 27, both in densely populated neighborhoods. On Oct. 3, several tons of bombs were dropped in an attempt to kill Hashem Safieddine, head of Hezbollah's Executive Council and likely successor to Nasrallah. Then on Oct. 10, a building believed to be sheltering Wafic Safa, head of Hezbollah’s Liaison and Coordination Unit, was also hit.
