Pope Francis discussed the situation in Lebanon and the region during a meeting on Friday at the Vatican with Syriac Catholic Patriarch of Antioch, Ignatius Youssef III Younan, according to a statement from the Syriac Catholic Patriarchate in Beirut.
Patriarch Younan addressed with the pope “The concerning situation in the Middle East and the importance of the Christian presence in the region, as well as the future... particularly the fate of war-torn Lebanon and the need for an immediate cease-fire... and the swift election of a president,” the statement said.
Patriarch Younan also thanked the pope “for his support of the Eastern churches during the difficult circumstances they are facing.”
