Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri stated on Wednesday that there has been no significant progress in "halting the war with Israel," adding that "the Americans say they want to stop it but are doing nothing about it," during an interview with the Saudi daily al-Sharq al-Awsat.

Berri, who also leads the Amal Movement, emphasized that the French and British continue to support Lebanon's call for a cease-fire. The Lebanese position, he said, remains the same as what he, caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati, and Progressive Socialist Party leader Walid Jumblatt expressed on Oct. 2, primarily advocating for a cease-fire and the implementation of U.N. Security Council Resolution 1701, which ended the 2006 war between Hezbollah and Israel.

Commenting on the mandate to negotiate given to him by Hezbollah, Berri said that "it is nothing new and changes nothing." This mandate was reaffirmed by Hezbollah’s deputy secretary-general, Sheikh Naim Qassem, in a speech on Tuesday.

"During the 2006 war, I was responsible for diplomatic negotiations, and I am doing the same now," he added, firmly denying rumors that he had considered refusing this mission.

Berri mentioned that he feels a greater sense of responsibility "since Hezbollah leaders no longer have freedom of movement," especially following the assassination of many of these leaders, including Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah, by Israel on Sept. 27. He also expressed hope for the upcoming U.N. Security Council meeting on Thursday, where the war in Lebanon will be on the agenda.
