Relentless and violent Israeli bombardments struck the southern suburbs of Beirut late Thursday, with one attack reportedly targeting Hashem Safieddine, head of Hezbollah's Executive Council and a likely successor to Hassan Nasrallah. On Friday morning, authorities announced that the Masnaa road was closed due to an Israeli strike near the border crossing between Lebanon and Syria.
Tracking the precise human toll of this war is challenging. However, we are compiling available figures each morning to reflect the previous day’s casualties.
Here are the official figures for Thursday, October 3, 2024.
The Lebanese Ministry of Health reported at midnight on October 3-4:
37 people were killed on Thursday, raising the total number of deaths related to the war since Oct. 8, 2023, to 2,011.
In detail, according to regional information from the Health Ministry for October 3:
- 19 deaths in the Nabatieh governate
- 5 deaths in the South Lebanon governate
- 2 deaths in the Bekaa governate
- 2 deaths in the Mount Lebanon governate
- 9 deaths in the Beirut governate
On Thursday, two Lebanese soldiers were killed in separate Israeli attacks in southern Lebanon, bringing the total number of soldiers killed this week to three. One soldier was killed on Monday, Sept. 30.
During a press conference Thursday afternoon, Health Minister Firas Abiad reported that, of the 1,974 fatalities since Oct. 8, the breakdown included:
- 127 children
- 261 women
- 97 emergency personnel, including: 4 members of the General Directorate of Civil Defense; 18 members of the al-Rissala Scouts Association, affiliated with the Amal movement; 68 members of the Islamic Health Committee, affiliated with Hezbollah; 7 members of the Lebanese Relief Association
- 2 nurses
- 11 health workers
Abiad also noted that more than 40 paramedics and firefighters had been killed over the past three days.
On Thursday, 151 people were reported injured, bringing the total number of injuries to at least 9,535 since Oct. 8, 2023.
According to the Health Ministry, the breakdown of injuries on Oct. 3 was as follows:
- 52 injured in the Nabatieh governate
- 37 injured in the South Lebanon governate
- 14 injured in the Bekaa governate
- 9 injured in the Baalbek-Hermel governate
- 15 injured in the Mount Lebanon governate
- 24 injured in the Beirut governate
Note: After the escalation of Sept. 23, Hezbollah no longer provides precise counts of deaths and injuries among its ranks.
According to Nasser Yassine, coordinator of the governmental emergency committee, more than one million people have been displaced in Lebanon due to Israeli bombardments since Oct. 8, 2023.
As of Oct. 1, 2024, the Lebanese Crisis Center reported that 176,080 Syrian citizens and 63,373 Lebanese citizens have fled to Syria since Sept. 23, totaling 239,453 people.
