Lebanon's caretaker Interior Minister, Bassam Mawlawi, criticized the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), accusing the agency of obstructing the departure of Syrian refugees from Lebanon. Mawlawi also emphasized that Lebanon does not want an expanded conflict with Israel.
In an interview with the Arabic-language American channel al-Hurra on Monday evening, Mawlawi stated, "Lebanon is not a country of assylum," he said referencing to the Syrian refugees, adding, "The UNHCR refuses to allow Syrian nationals to leave Lebanon and does not cooperate with the Lebanese government in handing over the database, data, etc."
Mawlawi also addressed Hezbollah’s August 24 strike in retaliation for the assassination of its military official, Fouad Shukur. He remarked that the operation was not reflective of the "preparations or fear experienced in Lebanon." He added that the Hezbollah's strike demonstrates that "all Lebanese do not desire a large-scale war, which Lebanon cannot withstand or bear its consequences."
"Therefore, there is a certain discipline on the part of Lebanon."
The minister noted a reduction in fears of a broader conflict, attributing this to political efforts in Lebanon and international diplomacy that have prevented southern Lebanon from becoming another Gaza. He praised the efforts of caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati, Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, and caretaker Foreign Minister Abdallah Bou Habib. Mawlawi also acknowledged the support of the United States, Saudi Arabia, and Gulf countries in safeguarding Lebanon.
Regarding the Lebanese deadlocked presidential election, Mawlawi said that the Berri "is doing everything necessary internally." He commended the efforts of the political quintet involved.
"If the presidential election does not occur, the government, Parliament, and Lebanese authorities must take the necessary legal measures to bolster the army and provide it with all needed support," he concluded.
