The draft's proponents are clinging to it while civil society is outraged by it. The draft amendment to Iraq's Personal Status Law No. 188 is once again under discussion in Iraq's Parliament. As in the past, the change proposed by representatives of the pro-Iranian Shiite Coordination Framework envisages letting Iraqis decide whether their personal status will be governed by Shiite or Sunni jurisprudence, rather than within the civil framework of unified Iraqi law. This measure represents a complete break with the current law, which came into force under President Abdel-Karim Kassem in 1959 and is considered one of the most liberal and protective of women's rights in the Arab world.
