War in south Lebanon: Behind Moscow’s sudden interest
Russia would be preparing to regain its influence in the region as geopolitical upheavals loom on the horizon. The objective is to carve out a role for itself in the future.

Russia is back in the news in Lebanon. Preoccupied by the war in Ukraine, Moscow had initially distanced itself from the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah in south Lebanon. It even seemed that it was betting on an expansion of the conflict in the Middle East, in which the US would be involved in supporting Israel, in the hope of weakening the US commitment with Kiev.In recent days, however, the presence of Russian diplomats was obvious in Lebanon and the region, where they seemed willing to reinvest themselves in a more tangible way.
