Up close and personal with Brigitte Bardot, Elissa and Batroun’s baywatch hero

Aaaaand breathe … you’ve made it through another week. Time to treat yourself to a lazy weekend and some lighter reading with Breakfast in Bed.

Up close and personal with Brigitte Bardot, Elissa and Batroun’s baywatch hero

By Jaimee Lee Haddad

I hope it’s been a good week for you and that you are as eager for the weekend as I am. How will you be spending your days off?

Personally, I will be on a mission to escape the oppressive heat of Beirut. I’m hoping to get some fresh air whilst camping in the mountains followed by a customary beach trip where I hope to find somewhat of a sea breeze. Maybe if I’m lucky I’ll spot local legend Elie Maroun (more on that below)!

But before the weekend activities commence, I’d love for you to join me for a particularly star-studded Breakfast in Bed to get the Saturday vibes going. So, grab a coffee, get comfy and tuck in to this weekend’s spread!

We met Brigitte Bardot!

While at times a divisive figure, there's no denying that Brigitte Bardot is a true icon of the 20th century. Once a prolific sex symbol, she now largely avoids the spotlight unless she's speaking about her devotion to animal rights advocacy or ruffling a few feathers with her views on politics and women. Her reclusiveness and outspoken nature make her all the more intriguing and it makes this rare interview with L’Orient Today a real treat.

One outspoken icon after another: Get to know Elissa

Lebanese singer Elissa has been a powerhouse of the Arab music industry for 25 years, fearlessly voicing her opinions and breaking taboos. Ahead of her performance in Beirut this summer we had a candid conversation with the star. Characteristically, she didn’t shy away from tough topics like the war in Gaza, Lebanese politics, violence against women and her run-ins with the Syrian regime.

Who is the beloved Elie Maroun?

Next, we meet Elie Maroun, Lebanon’s real-life ‘Baywatch’ hero who, with his tanned complexion and white-toothed smile, spends his spare time rescuing swimmers and saving lives on his jet ski. Having made 20 daring sea rescues this year alone, Elie shares his moving stories and near-death experiences with L’Orient Today. If you’re off to Batroun this weekend, you can breathe a little easier knowing that Elie is looking out for you.

A beach trip that won’t break the bank

And in the spirit of weekend beach trips, I thought I’d draw your attention to a particular feature from last week’s Lebanese summer guide. It’s a non-exhaustive guide to the remaining public beaches, from north to south, along Lebanon’s increasingly privatised coastline. I hope you find a gem or two amongst our selection for your own city escape.

Is the vegan scene taking off in Lebanon?

Have you ever considered going vegan? Perhaps you’re already one of the many people in Lebanon committed to plant-based living. Or maybe you’re a bit sceptical about veganism being a passing fad. Whichever side of the vegan argument you come down on, Suzanne Baaklini discusses how the trend is taking shape in Lebanon and has a restaurant recommendation that aims to satisfy vegans and carnivores alike.
