BEIRUT — The Lebanese Civil Defense on Saturday recovered the body of a man, who went missing on Wednesday in the vicinity of Palm Island, known to locals as jaziret al-aranib (rabbit island), off the coast of Tripoli, North Lebanon.

Members of the Civil Defense Marine Rescue Unit, with the support of nearby rescue centers and in coordination with the Lebanese Army's navy, carried out, for three days in a row, comprehensive field searches and surveys, in an effort to find the missing man.

On Saturday, the man's body was found on Arida beach, north of Tripoli, the Civil Defense said in a post on X. His fishing boat was also located.

The man drowned while fishing close to the island, which lies a half-hour boat ride off Mina in Tripoli, the Civil Defense said. The Civil Defense ambulance transported the deceased's body to a hospital after the competent security services completed the necessary legal procedures.

Unstable weather conditions and particularly powerful waves have at times made swimming off Lebanon's coasts particularly risky over the past several months. More than 10 people have drowned off Lebanon's coast since April 8.

The Civil Defense has previously asked people to "adhere to public safety guidelines when heading to the beach," reminding them to "call 125 to request assistance if necessary."
