The Lebanese Army announced in a press release Saturday that a Syrian national had died after coming under fire following what it described as an attempt to stab a soldier in Deir al-Ashayer, a town on the Bekaa.
The incident occurred on Friday, when an army and intelligence services patrol was engaged in an operation to arrest smugglers in the area. The man of Syrian nationality allegedly tried to stab one of the soldiers present before coming under fire from the army, the press release says, adding that the man was hit and transported to a hospital, where he died.
The army also announced the arrest of another Syrian during the operation, as well as the continuation of searches to arrest other suspects involved in the smuggling activities.
