Hamas on Wednesday hailed as a "victory" Colombia's decision to cut ties with Israel over the war in Gaza.

"We greatly appreciate the position of Colombian President Gustavo Petro ... which we consider a victory for the sacrifices of our people and their just cause," Hamas said in a statement, calling for other countries in Latin America to follow suit.

Israel's foreign minister on Wednesday said Colombian President Gustavo Petro's decision to cut diplomatic ties between the two countries over the war in Gaza amounted to handing a "reward" to Hamas.

"The Colombian president has promised to reward Hamas murderers and rapists – and today he delivered," Israel Katz said on X, formerly Twitter, warning that "history will remember that Gustavo Petro decided to stand by the most despicable monsters humanity has known."
