Israeli forces kill Palestinian, detain dozens in West Bank raids

Israeli forces on Tuesday killed a Palestinian man in the occupied West Bank, the Palestinian health ministry said, with an advocacy group reporting dozens of arrests in army raids over 48 hours.

Mohammed Youssef Manasra, 25, was killed when Israeli troops raided the Qalandia refugee camp near annexed east Jerusalem, the health ministry told AFP.

A witness said soldiers had entered the camp to arrest the slain Palestinian's brother, Abdallah.

"They tore open the door Mohammed was standing behind, killing him immediately, and Abdallah was arrested," said the witness.

The Israeli military said in a statement that troops had arrested "two wanted suspects" in Qalandia.

It also reported having arrested 21 Palestinians since Monday night.

The advocacy group Palestinian Prisoners' Club told AFP that the army had arrested 40 Palestinians overnight in the West Bank, which has been occupied by Israel since 1967.

Soldiers had entered the Qalandia camp searching for the suspected killer of 31-year-old Israeli Meir Tamari, who had been shot dead in his car near Jenin in the northern West Bank, the military said.

Also on Tuesday, according to video footage and witness accounts from the village of Qalqis near Hebron, a soldier shot a Palestinian said to have an intellectual disability, wounding him in the leg.

Three soldiers had stopped 36-year-old Tareq Ghazawi and asked for his identification, which he did not have with him, according to witness Mohammad Sidr.

"There was a dispute, and the soldiers pushed Tareq to the ground," he said, adding that another Palestinian intervened "to explain to the soldiers that Tareq had a mental problem, but one of them shot at him after he got up", hitting him in the leg.

A video taken by a witness at the scene shows a soldier shooting Ghazawi from a distance of less than two meters (six feet).

The Israeli army did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the incident.

Ghazawi was then taken to a hospital for treatment. His brother Diya told AFP that he "suffers from a mental handicap".

Violence has spiked in the West Bank since the start of the war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, sparked by the Palestinian group's deadly attacks on Oct. 7.

According to the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank, at least 255 Palestinians have been killed there by Israeli forces or settlers since Oct. 7.

The UN humanitarian office OCHA has put the number of West Bank Palestinian deaths at 244.
