BEIRUT — Two men were killed Wednesday night in the village of Khyara, in the Bekaa, in an exchange of fire with the Lebanese Army, the army said in a Thursday statement.

According to the statement, the two men were killed during an army raid on the village. A group of unidentified people — which included the two victims — shot at the army, and the soldiers returned fire. The army reported several injuries and said 10 people were arrested.

An investigation was opened and the army said it is working to locate the remaining suspects.

Violent clashes in the Bekaa are not uncommon. Clan rivalries are fairly frequent, often involving firearms, and the state has less control in the region.
