BEIRUT — The Lebanese Army on Thursday extinguished a fire on Rabbit island, off the coast of Tripoli, North Lebanon, using two helicopters, the military said in a tweet.

A fire broke out on Thursday afternoon on Rabbit island, located off of Mina in Tripoli. Rabbit island is popular tourist destination.

The Lebanese Army said that two of its helicopters extinguished the fire and that two of its marine rafts helped evacuate those who were on the island.

A spokesperson for the Civil Defense told L'Orient Today that they could not intervene because they do not have the means to reach the island.

Caretaker Environment Minister Nasser Yassin said in a statement on Thursday that the wooden tower (bird tower) on the island was destroyed due to the fire and that some other minor damage was reported. He also said that during the fire, all people visiting the island were evacuated quickly. Yassin also said he has referred the file to environment prosecutor, Judge Ghassan Bassil to investigate the matter.
