BEIRUT — Civil servants' salaries and raises for June 2023 will not be paid before Eid al-Adha, which is predicted to start June 28, as funding still has not been secured, the Finance Ministry announced Friday.

"The Ministry will not be able to pay salaries and increases for the month of June, as stipulated by Article 111 of the 2022 budget, before the Adha holiday, as the appropriations earmarked to finance these salaries have still not been secured for the time being," the statement said, without providing further details.

At the end of May, civil servants staged a two-week strike to demand higher pay and better living and working conditions, including an increase in transportation costs.

Lebanese public administrations are regularly on strike to demand measures enabling civil servants to cope with the socio-economic crisis that began in 2019. Since that year, the Lebanese lira suffered a record depreciation of over 90 percent.
