BEIRUT — A member of the Internal Security Forces is suspected of killing his ex-wife by running over her with his car in the town of Bsaba, Chouf, after which he fled to an unknown destination, L’Orient Today’s correspondent in the area reported.

“The victim's body is still lying on the ground, waiting for the coroner to arrive, the forensic team has attended the scene, and investigations have begun,” our correspondent reported just before 5 p.m.

Speaking to L'Orient Today, the mukhtar of Bsaba described the suspect as “in his 50s" and said his ex-wife was in her 40s and that they have children.

The mukhtar also said that the “security forces are now conducting investigations at the scene.”

In March, a 27-year-old Lebanese man from Baalbeck in the Bekaa was accused of killing his 26-year-old wife by shooting her three times. In February, a retired member of Lebanon's Internal Security Forces also killed his ex-wife using a hunting rifle in Tripoli, North Lebanon. Meanwhile, in August, Hanaa Khodr, 21, a mother of two children and five months pregnant at the time, was beaten and burned alive by her husband. That same month, another woman from Akkar, Ghinwa Alawi, a mother of three, tried to end her life after years of alleged domestic violence.

Women’s rights associations have denounced an “unprecedented” degree of violence in these recent incidents.

Activist Alia Awada had told L'Orient Today in August that the growing number of femicides and domestic violence cases in Lebanon is a direct consequence of the worsening economic and social situation in the country.
