BEIRUT — Lebanese Army commander Gen. Joseph Aoun on Wednesday said that Lebanon's security is an "essential condition" for economic growth and the work of its institutions, as the country grapples with a yearslong financial crisis.

Speaking a day before Liberation and Resistance Day, which commemorates the Israeli army's withdrawal from almost all of southern Lebanon in 2000, Aoun said that "the security of Lebanon, its stability, defending it, and securing its borders are the ultimate priorities for the military institution [the Lebanese Army]," adding, "this stability is an essential condition for economic growth and the work of the institutions."

Aoun also said that this "would have never been achieved and continued if it were not for the sacrifices" made by the military.

"Liberation and Resistance Day comes carrying the meaning of dignity and vigor. "On this holiday, we remember with honor and pride the historic victory that the Lebanese achieved against the Israeli enemy," Aoun added.
