BEIRUT — Unidentified gunmen opened fire Monday night on the home of Sheikh Hatem Othman, the mayor of Bzal in Akkar governorate, L'Orient Today's correspondent in the region reported.
Othman's windows and nearby car were hit by several bullets, with no reported injuries.
The Lebanese Army started carrying out raids on Tuesday morning in search of the suspects, our correspondent reported.
In September, caretaker Interior Minister Bassam Mawlawi announced a "sustainable" security plan to clamp down on shooting incidents in northern Lebanon.
However, such incidents have continued as weapons proliferate largely unregulated.
