BEIRUT — The Interior Ministry announced Tuesday the dates and procedures for running in upcoming municipal and mukhtar elections slated to start May 7. Financing for the elections, which were postponed for a year, is still unclear.
Here are the required documents:
- An individual civil registry extract.
- An extract from the criminal record not older than one month.
- A photocopy of the voters' list with the candidate's name on it, authenticated by the president of the counting commission.
- A deposit of LL500,000 to be submitted to at headquarters of the candidate's governorate.
Here are the dates to remember:
For the governorates of North Lebanon and Akkar:
- Election date: Sunday, May 7.
- Deadline for filing candidacies: from April 5 to April 26 before midnight.
- Deadline for withdrawal of candidacies: Monday, May 1 before midnight.
For the Mount Lebanon governorate:
- Election date: Sunday, May 14.
- Deadline for filing candidacies: from April 12 to May 3 before midnight.
- Deadline for withdrawal of candidacies: Monday, May 8 before midnight.
For the governorates of Beirut, Bekaa and Baalbeck-Hermel:
- Election date: Sunday, May 21.
- Deadline for filing candidacies: from April 19 to May 10 before midnight.
- Deadline for withdrawal of candidacies: Monday, May 15 before midnight.
For the governorates of South Lebanon and Nabatieh:
- Election date: Sunday, May 28.
- Deadline for filing candidacies: from April 26 to May 17 before midnight.
- Deadline for withdrawal of candidacies: Monday, May 22 before midnight.
Caretaker Interior Minister Bassam Mawlawi announced Monday that the municipal elections would be held starting May 7, urging politicians to find a way to finance them.
He added that "the cost of the elections will be secured by the Lebanese state, whether from the transfer of credit or special drawing rights [from the International Monetary Fund], while some funding will be covered by the UNDP [the United Nations Development Program]."
