BEIRUT — Japan has decided to allocate an emergency donation of $2 million to Lebanon through the World Food Program, the Japanese Embassy said in a statement Thursday.

This donation comes as a “response to the deteriorating food security across the country, which was exacerbated by Russia's aggression against Ukraine,” the statement explained.

The war harmed the production and shipment of grain supplies, including to Lebanon, which relies heavily on imported foods.

“This donation will support the efforts of the World Food Program to assist 300,000 of the most disadvantaged people in Lebanon, through monthly in-kind food rations, to meet their nutritional needs for a period of six months and mitigate the impact of the social and economic crisis on their livelihoods,” the statement noted.

“Through this initiative, Japan renews its commitment to continue standing by Lebanon and its people in light of the unprecedented challenges the country faces,” the statement concluded.

In January, the European Union announced that it had launched two new initiatives worth €25 million to provide support for “vulnerable people in Lebanon and to fight food insecurity.”

In October, the EU had announced that it would provide Lebanon with an additional €75 million in aid. Turkey, Italy, Qatar and the US, among other countries, have also sent aid to assist Lebanon, which is confronting one of the world's worst economic crises in recent history.
