BEIRUT — Employees and on-demand workers of the South Lebanon Water Authority went on strike Wednesday to demand an adjustment to their salaries, like other sectors of public administration, the state-run National News Agency (NNA) reported.

The workers cut the supply of running water in some localities in the region as a warning.

Work was thus suspended at the pumping stations of Batouliyeh, Kafra and Siddiqine, which supply water to villages in the districts of Sour and Bint Jbeil, "until the demands for higher salaries and transport allowances are met," the NNA reported.

Several sectors of Lebanon's public administration have staged strikes during the country's ongoing economic crisis. Since 2019, the national currency has lost more than 98 percent of its value, plunging more than 80 percent of the population below the poverty line.

Caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati already approved several measures to support public administration, including an increase in transportation allowances and exceptional assistance to civil servants of all categories, but civil servants say the measures are insufficient.
