BEIRUT — An earthquake with a magnitude of 4.0 degrees on the Richter scale was recorded north of Latakia, Syria, on Tuesday evening and was felt in Akkar and North Lebanon.

Two light earthquakes were recorded Tuesday morning off the Lebanese coast, near the city of Saida, South Lebanon, the National Center for Geophysics said.

The first tremor, with a magnitude of 4 on the Richter scale, occurred on Tuesday at 4:23 am, 64 km off the coast of Saida. The second, with a magnitude of 3.5, occurred at 9:30 am, 70 km from the city.

A 6.3 magnitude earthquake hit the Turkey-Syria border Monday night, sparking panic across Lebanon two weeks after the massive Feb. 6 earthquake that killed more than 46,000 people.

Several aftershocks have shaken Lebanon following the original Feb. 6 quake in Turkey and Syria. The tremors have led some people to flee homes at risk of collapse.
