BEIRUT — The prices of different packages of Arabic-style bread increased again on Friday in Lebanon as the country's spiraling lira traded at more than LL80,000 against the dollar on the parallel market.

According to a statement issued by the Economy Ministry, a small 343-gram bread bundle is now LL17,000, compared to LL16,000 for 338 grams Wednesday.

A medium package of 832 grams now costs LL29,000, against LL27,000 previously for 812 grams.

Finally, a large package of bread, which weighs 1,052 grams, is now worth LL35,000, against the previous LL33,000 for 1,046 grams.

In recent months, the Economy Ministry has justified these price increases by citing the soaring cost of fuel after the government lifted subsidies in 2022, as well as the lira's tanking value on the parallel market. The global price of wheat has also increased since the beginning of Russia's invasion of Ukraine one year ago.
