More than 30,000 killed in Turkey, Syria

The death toll from the violent earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria on Monday rose to 33,179 on Sunday, according to the latest official figures.

The 7.8-magnitude earthquake killed 29,605 people in southern Turkey, Afad, the Turkish state disaster management agency, announced on Sunday, while the authorities counted 3,574 dead in Syria. According to the UN, the death toll could "double."
