BEIRUT — An 11-year-old child was killed and two other children were injured after an unidentified device they were handling exploded in the Syrian village of Qusayr on the border with Lebanon.

They were transferred to a hospital in Hermel, in the Lebanese Bekaa, the state-run National News Agency reported.

The nationality of the victim and the two injured, aged seven and five — one of whom is in critical condition — was not specified. Hermel police are investigating the incident.

Syria has been ravaged since 2011 by a civil war during which explosive devices of all kinds are used.

In Lebanon, which has experienced several conflicts in recent decades, including a civil war between 1975 and 1990, as well as a war with Israel in 2006, explosions of mines and other devices still result in injuries and deaths every year. Many devices have been destroyed by the Lebanese Army and international organizations.
