BEIRUT — An army unit and the local intelligence branch on Monday arrested a man accused of firing military weapons three years ago that lead to the death of Sergeant Diab Halloum, who had served in the army's Bekaa Directorate, a security source told L'Orient Today.

The man, Jamal Hussein Shehadeh, had been accused of working with armed gangs, and of being involved in theft and armed robbery.

An investigation is underway with the relevant judicial authority, according to the security source.

Similar incidents are frequent in the Bekaa, a region with high rates of gun ownership. Armed clashes sometimes break out between the military and armed residents.
