BEIRUT — Armed robbers stormed a jewelry store on Friday in Dahr al-Ain, near Koura in northern Lebanon, witnesses and security sources told L'Orient Today.

Masked men reportedly stormed the shop and robbed items inside before fleeing to an unknown destination. Authorities later arrived on the scene and investigations were underway.

Caretaker Interior Minister Bassam Mawlawi said earlier in November that the crime rate in Lebanon has not increased this year amid the many crises the country is facing, in comparison with the same period in 2021.

General Security chief Abbas Ibrahim in June expressed concern about "social instability" and said it worried him "more than political instability" in the country. The commander-in-chief of the Lebanese Army, Joseph Aoun, also warned last Thursday of the potential for security incidents during the presidential vacuum, which began on Nov. 1 following the end of outgoing president Michel Aoun's mandate.
