SHARM EL-SHEIKH — US President Joe Biden on Friday praised Egypt for speaking up strongly on the war in Ukraine and said Cairo had been a key mediator in Gaza.

Biden was speaking as he met Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi at the COP27 summit in the resort of Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt.

This comes as Abd El Fattah, a political prisoner in Egypt, who has been on hunger strike since April 2, said he would stop drinking water on Sunday to coincide with the opening of the COP27 climate change talks that Egypt is hosting.

His family said they are deeply worried about his condition and that prison officials told them Thursday that there had been a medical intervention to sustain him.

Abd El Fattah was most recently sentenced in December 2021 to five years in prison on charges of spreading false news. That same month, he gained British nationality through his mother.
