One Palestinian was killed and another seriously injured on Friday in an Israeli army raid in the northern part of the occupied West Bank in the city of Jenin, the Palestinian Health Ministry said.

After reporting that "two martyrs arrived at the government hospital in Jenin," the ministry corrected this figure and said that only one person had been killed and six others wounded, one of them seriously, with a bullet in the head.

Contacted by AFP, the Israeli army did not comment on this information immediately but had previously indicated that it was conducting an operation in the Jenin refugee camp. Many soldiers were deployed in the camp at dawn and clashes broke out, reported witnesses and the official Palestinian news agency Wafa.

Over the weekend, four Palestinian teenagers were killed by Israeli soldiers, two of whom were in Jenin's refugee camp, which has seen regular military raids this past week.

In May, during her coverage of an Israeli assault in Jenin, Palestinian-American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh was shot in the head, while wearing her press gear. A CNN investigation later reported that Abu Akleh was likely killed in a targeted attack by Israel's Defense Forces.

Violence has increased in recent months in the northern part of the occupied West Bank, particularly in the Nablus and Jenin areas where armed groups operate and where the Israeli army has stepped up operations in the wake of deadly anti-Israeli attacks in March and April.

These raids, often accompanied by clashes with the Palestinian population, have resulted in more than a hundred deaths on the Palestinian side, the highest death toll in the West Bank for nearly seven years, according to the UN. On Wednesday, an 18-year-old Palestinian was killed by the army in clashes that broke out in the Al-Aroub refugee camp near the southern city of Hebron, as youths protested against Israeli operations.

Two Israeli soldiers have also been killed in recent days, sparking a massive manhunt and violence in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, an area occupied and annexed by Israel. Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid said Thursday that "The security forces will remain mobilized until the terrorists and those who sent them are arrested." The West Bank is a Palestinian territory occupied since 1967 by Israel.

Correction: AFP has issued a correction after the Palestinian health ministry revised its toll and announced one Palestinian has been killed. An older version of this article stated two Palestinians had been killed.
