ABL calls for establishment of ‘specialized’ court for banking sector

BEIRUT — The Association of Banks in Lebanon on Wednesday called for the establishment of “a court specialized in banking matters, similar to the special court for financial markets,” which would be “composed of a judge with experience in banking laws and two members well-versed in banking matters.”

Here’s what we know:

    • The request came in a statement ABL shared with the media “in light of the complexities and technicalities” of Lebanon’s banking laws.

    • Lebanese banks began a one-day strike Monday over what the ABL referred to as “populist, harmful stances” taken against the sector, particularly after the arrest of the head of Lebanon’s Creditbank this week, Tarek Khalife, who was later released.
