BEIRUT — Lebanon on Saturday condemned Israel’s raids in the Gaza Strip, where fighting continues between Islamic Jihad and Israeli forces. In the territory’s worst since Israeli’s 2021 attacks, the Israeli military said 15 fighters were killed in attacks that began Friday afternoon; Gaza authorities reported 11 dead, including a five-year-old girl, and more than 80 injured.

Here’s what we know:

  • The Lebanese government “strongly condemns the Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement Saturday, calling on the international community “to intervene quickly to stop this assault and demand that Israel obey international decisions, to protect Palestinian civilians suffering from the oppressive Israeli siege.”

  • Lebanon has been experiencing heightened tensions with its southern neighbor since in June, when a gas platform arrived in the Karish field off the Lebanese-Israeli coast. A month later, Hezbollah launched three drones in the direction of this offshore gas field, which were intercepted by the Israeli army, followed by repeated threats of war.

  • Marches were organized in Palestinian camps in the south of the country from Friday evening to condemn the Israeli attacks on Gaza,  our correspondent reported. In Saida’s Ain al-Hilweh camp a march was organized “against the Israeli aggression,” at the initiative of Islamic Jihad and other local Palestinian forces. Cries of anger and anti-Israel slogans were heard.

  • In the Palestinian camp of Jalil, Baalbeck, a sit-in was organized in front of the area’s Islamic Jihad center, attended by representatives of political parties. Palestinian flags were abundant. This aggression is a heinous crime that adds to the series of Zionist crimes against the Palestinian people, which have led to a series of martyrs,” said one participant, warning, “The response to all these crimes will come and it will be powerful.”

  • Lebanon’s House Speaker and Amal Movement leader Nabih Berri issued a statement Saturday saying he “strongly condemns the Israeli aggression against the Palestinian people and its Resistance … This event shows the danger that the Zionist entity poses to peace and security in the region. The text went on to call on the international community to put pressure on Israel. — reporting by Mountasser Abdallah
